End of the 2014-2015 School Year!

The month of May is one of the most exciting times at GTH.

By May students and teachers know each other well, each student’s sense of humor is understood (and most of the time appreciated), flowers grow, windows open, fresh air blows in through the screens, and best of all - expectations are well understood. Of course, students are antsy at this time too. Students have been challenged and held accountable. They have been working hard and have been learning for months. All good things. We at Global Treehouse work to provide students an environment that fosters everyday fun in an atmosphere in which they can relax while learning. Even so, summer is here and while we all believe learning is something that goes with us each and every day - everyone is still thankful that our break is here!

So why is May one of the most exciting times at our school? Traditional studies begin to naturally ebb off and students are given choices as to what area of study they want to learn about for the rest of our time together!

In the area of Science? Dinosaurs!

This unit also had a math section, which considering how we ended 1st grade math early, worked out perfectly!

It also included an area to exercise our creativity and imagination. After studying about dinosaur eggs we made our own out of paper mache, paint, and yes - there was a dinosaur inside!

... and for a student who loves to read, books are a most excellent resource!

Since we are traveling back in time, why not enjoy a New York Time's Bestseller? History or enjoyment? Difficult to tell - especially when an 8th grader decides to get his work done so he can join in.
(Yes, you did read that correctly!)

For students who don't especially enjoy writing, "Sentence Chef" is  a great resource.
This unit focuses on nouns, verbs, and adjectives to create silly sentences with hands-on activities.

Is first grade too early to teach about plots and main ideas?
Nope, and when you have a student come and ask if she can write a short story this is a great supplement to help guide their writing!

Independent desk time and independent computer time.
Self motivation is a key to success.

Our last day of school is always filled up with nonstop fun!
We decided a "Mad Scientist Party" would be a perfect way to end the year with a boom!

Is it possible to poke a balloon without it popping? Is it possible to poke a baggie filled with water without the water gushing out? Yep, and it has everything to do with the exciting science of polymers!

Check out that white film canister flying in the blue sky! You could ask a student what this simple science experiment is all about or simply click Film Canister Rocket to find out!

Or stop by Bottle Rocket to see what building pressure teaches us about action/reaction.
This experiment could also double up as a great life lesson!

Watching daisies change color, while a standard in the science world, is still exciting to watch.

Water balloons?  Nothing to do with science....everything to do with fun!

As we close the doors to another school year (that is until our optional summer school begins) we wish each student a restful vacation.  We can't wait to hear about what you learn over the summer!
